Burn Ban Still in Effect
Tualatin Valley Fire and Rescue (TVF&R) wants to remind citizens that the district is still a High-Fire Danger Burn area, originally enacted in June 14, 2023. This notice will remain active throughout TVF&R jurisdiction, including areas in Washington, Multnomah, Clackamas, and Yamhill counties.
According to the press release:
The burn ban prohibits all the following:
- Backyard or open burning (branches, yard debris, etc.).
- Agricultural burning (agricultural wastes, crops, field burning, etc.).
- Any other land clearing, slash, stump, waste, debris or controlled burning.
The burn ban does not prohibit:
- Small outdoor cooking, warming or recreational fires. These include portable or permanent fire pits, fire tables, and campfires, with a maximum fuel area of three feet in diameter and two feet in height in a safe location away from combustibles or vegetation and are fully extinguished after use.
- Barbeque grills, smokers and similar cooking appliances with clean, dry firewood, briquettes, wood chips, pellets, propane, natural gas, or similar fuels.
Fire chiefs in Washington County encourage the public to use extreme caution with activities that could start a fire. It is everyone’s responsibility to prevent and be prepared for wildfires.

Work Begins on the Newberg Library Windows
The Carnegie windows and doors restoration process at the Newberg Public Library started on Monday, September 18 thanks to a donation from the Newberg Library Friends. According to the library’s Instagram account, the original windows, installed in 1912, were rotting and compromising the integrity of the wood frames and glass.
“You can expect to see windows and doors go and come back for the next several months.”
While the library will be darker during the repairs, the library will be fully accessible during the maintenance.

Paving on Elliott Road to Continue Through Thursday
Construction on N Elliott Road from Oregon Highway 99W to Haworth, which started Tuesday September 19, will continue through Thursday, September 21. Paving may extend through September 22, according to the project website supplied by the City of Newberg. The contractor (The Suanders Co) and subcontractor (Knife River) started grinding and removing the pavement in that area on September 13.
Pavement striping and marking is scheduled on October 9 and 10.
What you can do:
- Expect traffic delay: Take N Villa Road or N Springbrook Road to detour around N Elliott Road.
- Observe traffic control and detour signs, watch for workers in construction zone, and drive with care.
- Manage your parking because parking is not be allowed due to active paving operations, and the newly placed asphalt needs curing time before traffic is allowed.

City of Newberg Reminds Town of School Bus Safety
The City of Newberg released a bullet pointed list of ways to stay safe during school season transportation.
- When backing out of a driveway or leaving a garage, watch out for children walking or bicycling to school.
- When driving in neighborhoods with school zones, watch out for young people who may be thinking about getting to school, but may not be thinking of getting there safely.
- Slow down. Watch for children walking in the street, especially if there are no sidewalks in neighborhood.
- Watch for children playing and congregating near bus stops.
- Be alert. Children arriving late for the bus may dart into the street without looking for traffic.
- Learn and obey the school bus laws in your state, as well as the “flashing signal light system” that school bus drivers use to alert motorists of pending actions:
- Yellow flashing lights indicate the bus is preparing to stop to load or unload children. Motorists should slow down and prepare to stop their vehicles.
- Red flashing lights and extended stop arms indicate the bus has stopped and children are getting on or off. Motorists must stop their cars and wait until the red lights stop flashing, the extended stop-arm is withdrawn, and the bus begins moving before they can start driving again.
