The restaurant offers dine-in and takeout service. Inside, the 16-seat dining room features green upholstered booths, wooden tables and chairs, large windows, and decorative Asian artwork along the walls.
The restaurant is open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday and is closed on Mondays.
The building previously housed Jin’s Chinese Restaurant, which took over from Chan’s of Dundee around April 2018. Jin’s served Chinese food in Dundee before Fortune House opened in October.
The location appealed to co-owner Lin Zhao because of its accessibility to people traveling through the area, including those heading between Portland and the Oregon Coast.
“When you come in from Newberg, you see the Dundee welcome sign,” Zhao said. “You turn right on 1st Street, and look, it’s right here.”
Fortune House is Zhao’s first restaurant as an owner, but he brings years of experience in the food-service industry. Zhao, who grew up in China, moved to the United States in 2003 and spent about 10 years at a Panda Express restaurant in Vancouver, Washington, where he oversaw operations and employees. He brought several former co-workers from Panda Express to work at Fortune House, helping build the restaurant’s seven-person staff.
He now hopes to apply that experience to building a business of his own, he said, and has aspirations of opening two or three more locations within five years.
Zhao said he wants customers to enjoy their dining experience at Fortune House and leave satisfied with their meals.
“The people who come over here, I want to make them happy to walk in, happy to walk out, you know?” Zhao said. “Making good food for a good community.”
