NEWBERG, Ore. — A family-owned gift shop is opening at 300 E. First St. in downtown Newberg on Friday, bringing plants, home goods, collectibles, and a complimentary cup of coffee or tea to the block across from Cliff Creek Cellars.

Corner Gifts, on the corner of E 1st St. and S Washington St. that previously housed Isabelle Truchon Cascade Hasson Sotheby’s International Realty, will hold its grand opening May 1 starting at noon. The shop is owned and operated by Karen, Emily, and Tim Benham.

Tim and Karen Benham are Newberg natives who graduated from Newberg High School before moving to Dayton in the early 1990s, where they raised their daughters. Two years ago, Karen and Emily Benham purchased a small shop in Dayton operating under the name Soiree. The move to Newberg comes with a name change — and a sharpened focus.

“We are hoping to bring gifts and home goods that will augment and fill in the gaps of the great products Newberg’s small businesses already offer,” Karen Benham said. “We are a small store, but have a little bit of a lot of different products.”

The shop’s inventory will span a wide range: children’s toys and books, cards, notebooks, women’s scarves, jewelry, socks, body care products, kitchen gadgets, chocolates, and locally made jams and hot sauce. Corner Gifts will also carry collectable stemware, decanters, vases, silverplate trays, and houseplants, including air plants.

Karen said she and Emily Benham will be the faces behind the counter, running day-to-day operations; Tim Benham works behind the scenes.

The business aims to offer more than merchandise.

“Our goal is to offer a relaxing and pleasant atmosphere for shopping, or just chatting with a complimentary cup of tea or coffee,” Karen Benham said.
