Pet of the Month: Luna the Cat

Meet Luna the Cat, Newberg Animal Shelter’s longest tenured cat currently in residence.

This is part of the “Pet of the Month” feature in partnership with the Newberg Animal Shelter. The goal is to shine a light on some of the shelter’s longest tenured residents with the hopes of them finding their forever homes. To learn more, visit the Newberg Animal Shelter website.

Luna is a 7-year-old domestic short-haired cat with a confident, queenly personality—and after nearly a full year at the Newberg Animal Shelter, she’s ready to find a forever home.

Luna first arrived at the shelter Feb. 4, 2025, after being surrendered when her owner was no longer able to care for her. She was briefly adopted in July but returned just two days later. Since then, she has remained at the shelter, making her the longest-tenured cat currently in residence.

At about 13 pounds, Luna is a plush domestic short hair with a calm, observant presence. From her favorite high perch in the free-roaming cat room, she quietly surveys the activity below, keeping watch over her surroundings like the ruler of her domain.

Luna is known for her independent streak and strong personality. She enjoys affection—but on her own terms. When she’s in the mood, she’ll happily seek out pets, companionship, or a playful interaction. When she’s ready for space, she may swat or give a gentle love bite as her way of setting boundaries.

Despite her sass, staff say Luna can be deeply affectionate and forms strong bonds with people who respect her personality. Because of her assertive nature, she would do best with an experienced cat owner who understands feline body language and appreciates a companion with character.

After nearly a year of shelter life, Luna is more than ready for a quiet home where she can settle in comfortably and share her affection with the right person.
