“The restaurant was getting to be too much for us,” said Gurpreet Singh, who co-owns the food cart with his family. “My father was experiencing some health problems, and we decided to downgrade.”
Singh said his family opened the Golden Sparrow Indian Restaurant on Liberty Street in Salem in November 2023. The restaurant holds a 4.7-star rating out of 5 from 112 reviews on Google and a 4.6-star rating on DoorDash.
After Singh’s father suffered a stroke midway through last year, the family decided running the restaurant in Salem was too much to manage. They began the process of closing the restaurant and looked for a food cart location. They found an open space in Newberg.
“Newberg is close enough [to Salem], and it’s a nice, small town,” Singh said. “We saw there wasn’t any Indian food here, so it’s good to fill a need.”
Singh recommends that first-time visitors try the butter chicken, garlic naan, and samosas. The menu includes several vegetarian options, and many dishes can be made gluten-free and dairy-free, he said.
Golden Sparrow is open Monday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Singh said they may close early if there are no customers in the final hour of business, but they will try to stay open until 8 p.m.
The food cart joins Bangkok Noi Thai, Thatsawrap Foods, Las Cazuelitas de la Mixteca, La Guerrero Cocina Mexicano, Pupusas Sabor Lo Nuestro, and Bobablastic food carts at The Bite of Newberg.
Customers can place orders at the cart or through DoorDash. Singh said they plan to add other food delivery apps in the future, but it takes 30 days to verify a location transfer.
Singh said the family is excited about the smaller space and simpler management while offering a type of cuisine that’s currently unavailable in Newberg.
“We want to invite people to come and enjoy our food,” Singh said. “We’re excited to share the food with Newberg.”
