“Our sister cities bring valuable cultural, economic, and educational exchange to Newberg, and the program will continue to grow in the future,” the City of Newberg stated in a press release.
Delegates from Poysdorf, Austria—including the town’s mayor, David Jilli, members of their city council, and representatives from various industries—visited Newberg from July 1 to July 8. During their visit, they experienced Newberg’s Chehalem Cultural Center, local bars and restaurants, the St. Paul Rodeo, local enterprise locations like A-dec, and more. The Poysdorf delegates also visited several area wineries, sharing some of the wine from their vineyards in Austria.
A delegation from Newberg will visit Poysdorf in two years as part of the sister city cultural exchange agreement.

Asago City Heads to Newberg
Newberg’s other sister city, Asago City, Japan, is planning a visit to Newberg in August. While the sister city relationship with Poysdorf is fostered because of the cultural and economic similarities between the two cities, the Asago City relationship was born out of a student exchange program with Chehalem Valley Middle School (CVMS), which continues to drive the relationship today.
The Asago City visit is centered around the student exchange, according to the release, and will largely focus on the school system.
However, the Chehalem Valley Chamber of Commerce is hosting a meet and greet event at its offices (112 N. Garfield St. #103) on August 2 starting at 9 a.m. Members of the community are welcome and encouraged to attend the event and meet the members of the Japanese delegation.
The sister city relationship with Asago City (formerly Wadayama) was formalized on July 30, 2000, after CVMS established a successful long-term cultural exchange with the town and its middle school.

“The City of Newberg is excited to continue fostering our sister city relationships,” the City of Newberg stated in the release. “Our sister cities offer the opportunity for cultural, economic, and educational enrichment to all members of Newberg’s community.”
Community members are invited to participate in the sister city cultural exchange program, which helps foster and nurture these relationships. Those wishing to learn more about being on the cultural exchange committees can send an email to publicaffairs@newbergoregon.gov or visit the City of Newberg website.
