Local Farmer and Small Business Owner David “Bubba” King Announces Campaign for Yamhill County Commissioner

David “Bubba” King, co-owner of local farm Godspeed Hollow and former co-owner of Honey Pie Pizza, announced his nonaffiliated campaign for Yamhill County Commissioner in a press release dated October 18, 2023.

“I live here, I work here, I’m raising my kids here – and I want my kids to want to live here when they grow up,” King wrote in a press release. “There’s a lot of change on the horizon, and I’d like to be at the table for that change–representing all residents of Yamhill County.

“I’m committed to bringing people together, learning about what’s most important to my constituents, and elevating their priorities and concerns.”

According to filing documents, King is running for Yamhill County Commissioner, Position 2. The Yamhill County Commissioner primary election will take place May 21, 2024. King is the first and only candidate to file candidacy with the county as of October 23, 2023.

New Table Top Game Store, Expansion Games, Coming to Newberg

Blake and Kara Estep, owners of & East Woodworking, announced plans to open Expansion Games on Instagram October 6, 2023.

“Our goal is to create a space where everyone feels welcome and comfortable – where we can provide everyone that chance to feel what we feel when we play games. Whether you’re the one who’s just happy to play or the one who just has to win – game lovers of all levels will feel like they’re in good company, and will find games they love.”

Kara said the goal is for Expansion Games to have their own storefront downtown, but will start by selling games amongst the books at Chapters Coffee and Tea on November 1. To start, they’ll stock mostly board games but hope to expand into playing cards like Pokémon, table top role playing games like Dungeons & Dragons, and some locally made gaming supplies.

Yamhill County Artist Showcase Winners Announced

The winners of the Yamhill County Artist Showcase art show were named on October 6.

“This exhibition is a celebration of our local artists & makers of any skill level displaying a variety of mediums,” according to the Cultural Center website.

The showcase was juried by Bradley Lawrence of the Lawrence Gallery. The exhibition will be on display in the Chehalem Cultural Center’s Parrish Gallery until December 22, 2023.

Newberg City Council Announces George Fox Women’s Golf Championship Day

Mayor Bill Rosacker and the Newberg City Council invited George Fox University (GFU) women’s golf team to the October 16 City Council meeting to honor the national championship team with a dedicated “George Fox Women’s Golf Championship Day”, to be celebrated on May 12.

“I urge all residents of Newberg to join me in celebrating the George Fox women’s golf team and to acknowledge their outstanding accomplishment, as they have brought immense pride and honor to our community.”

The GFU Women’s Golf team won it’s first NCAA Division III title under head coach Mary Jo McCloskey on May 12, 2023.

The national championship is the fourth NCAA title in George Fox Athletics history, according to an article on GFU’s athletics website, joining baseball (2004), women’s basketball (2009), and women’s track and field (2018).

The Bruins are just the third women’s golf program west of the Mississippi and the first school in the Pacific Northwest to win the title.

Trick or Treat Street is Back in Downtown Newberg

The Newberg Downtown Coalition (NDC) is bringing back the annual Trick or Treat Street to Downtown Newberg on Tuesday, October 31 from 5 – 7 p.m.

Local businesses and organizations will be set up on E. 1st Street handing out candy and offering other fun activities like a photo booth, according to a release from NDC.

The Newberg Public Works team will set up road blocks and volunteers from the Newberg Kiwanis Club will be set up to help visitors cross E. 1st Street safely during the event.

Durant Celebrates Olio Nuovo Festival

An annual celebration of the olive harvest and processing, Durant is howing the Olio Nuovo Festival during the month of November with tours, tastings, a holiday marketplace, and the new Feast Olio.

Feast Olio takes place every Saturday in November at 11 a.m., where guests will tour the newly equipped olive mill while sipping on Durant’s Blanc de Blancs, and enjoy a meal hosted by either Paul Durant, Spencer Spetnagel, or Vincent Rolleri featuring Durant wines and the 2023 Olio Nuovo paired iwth a seven course farm-to-table meal. Seatings are limited, $175 per person.
