Maple came to the Newberg Animal Shelter as an owner surrender shortly after giving birth to a litter of kittens — and shelter staff say she’s spent the months since earning a well-deserved rest. Now that she’s back on her feet, Maple is ready to find a home of her own.

The transition wasn’t easy. Raising her litter took a physical toll, and Maple developed an upper respiratory infection on top of the recovery. She spent time in foster care with shelter staff while she healed from both. Some of her kittens remain at the shelter and are also looking for their forever homes.

Now feeling better, Maple has plenty of personality to spare. Staff describe her as a cat who knows what she wants: a good chin scratch, affection on her own terms, and — more often than not — a soft spot for men. She tends to warm up to men more quickly, though she can build a bond with any patient adult given time and understanding.

Beneath the sass is a sweet side, staff say, and Maple would do best with someone who appreciates an independent cat and is willing to let their relationship develop at her pace. She’s been doing well around other cats in the shelter’s free-roaming cat room, and staff believe she could settle in well with feline housemates given proper introductions. She would be best suited to a home without young children, or with older children who can respect her space.
