DUNDEE, Ore. — The country’s only dedicated vinotherapy spa has arrived in the Dundee Hills, giving Yamhill County residents and wine-country visitors a new reason to lie back and continue enjoying the region’s prized crop in a different way.

The Wine Spa, which opened its original location on Northeast Broadway in Portland in November 2024, launched its second location on June 6, occupying a space adjacent to the Dundee Hotel. The Dundee location offers massages, facials, and vinotherapy foot soaks — wine-infused soaks paired with massage therapy — along with the full Caudalie facial menu available at the Portland spa.

Kelly Lewis, who previously owned a women’s tour company called Damesley, said the concept came to her while visiting vinotherapy spas in the Republic of Georgia. When she returned to Portland, she spotted a vacancy on Northeast Broadway — formerly home to a Massage Envy — and opened The Wine Spa.

The Portland location was named one of Time magazine’s 100 Greatest Places in the World to Visit in 2025, a distinction Lewis described as validation for a concept that drew skepticism before it drew customers.

“When we first opened the Portland spa, all the comments were like, ‘Oh, it’s so Portland,'” she said. “Then people started coming, and our reviews reflect the experience.”

The Dundee location operates differently from its Portland counterpart. While the Northeast Broadway spa features four private vinotherapy immersion tubs — large jetted baths filled with warm water, Epsom salts, and locally sourced red wine — the Dundee space was designed as what Lewis calls a “social spa,” with zero-gravity reclining chairs for foot soaks and seating, two treatment rooms for facials and massages, and capacity for up to nine guests at a time.

Lewis said the Portland spa’s full immersion tubs remain a future possibility for Dundee, with renovations potentially planned for the slower winter months.

Vinotherapy: Science of the Wine Soak

Vinotherapy — the use of wine and grape-derived ingredients in skincare and wellness treatments — predates the modern spa industry by centuries. Some trace its origins to ancient Rome, where physicians reportedly used wine to treat gladiators’ wounds; others point to Cleopatra’s reputed use of wine baths for beauty

The spa’s facial services use products from Caudalie, a French skincare brand Lewis described as the pioneer of vinotherapy in the beauty industry. Two antioxidants drive the treatments: resveratrol, derived from the stalk of grapevines and associated with anti-aging and circulation benefits, and viniferine, derived from the sap of grapevines.

“Viniferine was discovered because French farmers were putting sap on the dark spots of their hands when they were picking grapes, and they started noticing it was getting lighter and lighter,” Lewis said.

Caudalie says viniferine is 62 times more effective at brightening skin than vitamin C. Lewis added that Caudalie’s Paris-based training team worked directly with The Wine Spa’s estheticians — making the business, according to Lewis, the only spa in Oregon authorized to offer Caudalie’s signature facial services.

Lewis acknowledged that some guests remain uncertain about the scientific benefits of soaking in wine specifically, as distinct from the topical application of grape extracts.

“Is it going to cure an ailment? I don’t know — we’re all different,” she said. “Is it going to make you feel like a queen and very relaxed? Yes. And these days, that’s a win.”

Upcycled Wine, Local Focus

The wine used in the spa’s treatments is upcycled from Willamette Valley producers — wine that cannot be sold commercially due to bottling, labeling, or processing errors but retains its antioxidant properties. Lewis said the arrangement benefits area winemakers, for whom disposing of unusable wine in bulk can be a significant expense.

“We’re at the point where we get kegged amounts of wine, not bottles,” she said. “It’s way less waste.”

The spa was not targeting Dundee so much as Dundee targeted it. Lewis said the Dundee Hotel reached out to see if she wanted to use the space for one of her wine spas.

“It feels like Dundee found me,” Lewis said.

Lewis said she set Dundee’s service prices deliberately at a level to be accessible to area residents, not just hotel guests. Foot soaks start at $99 for 40 minutes, and rise to a 120-minute full experience that includes foot scrub, pinot noir foot soak, 50-minute full massage, and 30-minute facial for $399. They also have a “Soakciety” membership, where spa goers pay $99 per month and receive a 50-minute massage or vino express facial as well as discounts at the spa store, member-only discounts, exclusive tastings, and guest rates.

“We’re limited by space and scope, but we saw that as an opportunity to create a social spa,” Lewis said. “A group could come in here, have some wine and chat while soaking or in the zero-gravity chairs, then they trade off massages, all while catching up and relaxing.

The spa has room to accommodate groups of up to nine guests and is available for private events, including bachelorette parties and celebrations. Lewis said those bookings have already become a draw, given the Dundee Hotel’s existing reputation as a destination for group stays.

In the spa’s first two weeks, Lewis said the split between hotel guests and locals has been roughly even, which she called an encouraging early sign.

“Wine can be intimidating, and going to a spa can be kind of intimidating too,” she said. “We’re not so fancy that anyone can’t fit in. We try to make wine and this experience fun.”

The Wine Spa’s Dundee location is adjacent to the Dundee Hotel at 1410 OR 99W in Dundee, Ore. Hours and booking are available at thewinespa.com.
