Sky doesn’t look like a dog who’s had it easy. But you’d never know it from her tail.
The roughly 2-year-old mixed-breed arrived at the Newberg Animal Shelter about six weeks ago as a stray, brought in amid a county investigation into possible neglect. She was underweight, losing her coat, and suffering from a bacterial skin infection that had left her in rough shape. The photos from her intake tell the whole story.
But the photos from last week? They tell a completely different story altogether.
After a course of oral antibiotics and regular medicated baths, Sky’s skin is healing and her hair is growing back — a brindle coat that hints at a mix shelter staff say they can only guess at. Short legs, a long body, and a medium build of about 30 pounds have led staff to speculate there may be some corgi or basset hound somewhere in her lineage, though even the shelter veterinarian wasn’t sure. Shelter staff said they’d love for whoever adopts her to share the results if they ever get DNA testing done.
Whatever her breed, Sky has come a long way.
“She has made significant improvement,” shelter staff said, noting that she will need continued medicated baths until she has fully healed — a routine that will carry over to her new home for a while after adoption.
Sky can be reactive around other dogs, and shelter staff say she would likely do best as the only dog in a calm, quiet household where she can continue to recover and decompress. The shelter is open to a foster-to-adopt arrangement for the right match.
“We really want to find this sweet girl the happy ending she deserves,” shelter staff said, “with a loving forever family.”
