Sparky doesn’t ask for much. A warm lap, a chin scratch, and someone who’s in it for the long haul.
The 5½-year-old black-and-white domestic shorthair is this month’s featured pet at the Newberg Animal Shelter. She came to the shelter in January after her owner lost their housing and made the difficult decision to rehome her — a hard situation for everyone involved, shelter staff says, but one that left Sparky ready for a fresh start.
She’s been working on that patience ever since.
“She has spent time in the shelter learning patience, and now she’s ready for a home that can give her the attention and love she has been missing,” shelter staff writes in her profile.
Sparky’s adjustment to shelter life hasn’t been without its challenges — she was shy in the communal cat room and preferred to keep to herself at first. But she showed no aggression, and once she felt comfortable, her real personality started coming through: talkative, affectionate, and genuinely devoted.
“Every pet is met with gentle leaning, soft purrs, adorable chirps, and a reminder that she loves hard,” shelter staff say.
She’s the kind of cat who will announce herself when she wants attention and then melt into your side once she has it. Shelter staff describes her as chill, observant, and smart — a natural fit for quiet evenings at home.
Sparky would do best in a dog-free household. She can be selective with feline housemates, so she’d thrive either as the sole pet or alongside cats that are calm and easygoing.
“If you’re looking for a devoted, calm cuddle partner who loves deeply,” shelter staff write, “Sparky is the one for you.”
