NEWBERG, Ore. — Listen, I’m a words guy. To the point where I didn’t take a single photojournalism class in college (and somehow I served as the photo editor for the University of Oregon Ethos Magazine). But since starting this publication, I’ve realized just how impactful a good photo can be for a story, and decided to really sharpen my photography skills.
This Year in Pictures is my attempt to step back from the keyboard and let the photos do more of the talking. I took one impactful image from each month of 2025 (plus an extra one from June, which was a big month).
And because I didn’t take a single photojournalism class in college, I decided to spend part of the summer taking (and ace-ing, by the way) a photojournalism class through the University of California, Santa Cruz. It really helped me understand the art of photojournalism and how to ethically capture a scene for storytelling.
The beauty of this set is that they’re not overly polished. They’re real moments from our stories that may fall in between the social media landscape, but were captured this year so we can look back and remember these powerful moments.
