Arrest Made in Newberg Library Vandalism

On Friday, June 7, The Newberg-Dundee Police Department (NDPD) said they arrested a suspect in connection with vandalism at the Newberg Public Library.

On Wednesday, June 5, NDPD responded to calls reporting a projectile that struck and broke a large window facing E Hancock Street. The window displayed a Pride Flag as part of a Pride Month display in the library, according to a statement from Newberg Mayor Bill Rosacker.

After a thorough investigation, the suspect was identified to be a juvenile, stated a press release from NDPD. The investigation determined the juvenile acted alone, cooperated with detectives and was arrested. The suspect’s case has been referred to the Yamhill County Juvenile Department for prosecution.

The broken window was installed in January 2024 as protection for the original windows on the building dating back to 1912. The historic windows were unscathed in the vandalism.

First Federal Savings & Loan Awards Eight Scholarships to Area High Schoolers

According to a press release from First Federal Savings & Loan, the McMinnville-based institution awarded eight Yamhill-county high schoolers with $5,000 scholarships.

Those students are headed to various Oregon colleges and universities like Linfield University, George Fox University, Pacific University, and Oregon Institute of Technology. One scholarship recipient is attending school out-of-state at the University of Arizona.

“Scholarship recipients were selected based on demonstrated exceptional character, financial need, work experience, strong leadership skills, active community involvement, and academic achievements,” stated the release.

Chehalem Cultural Center Welcomes New Ceramics Residents

According to a post on Instagram, the Chehalem Cultural Center is welcoming three new artists selected for the 2024 Ceramics Studio Residency.

• Mya Cluff will be the resident for June 2024. Cluff was born and raised in Oregon, then moved to Montana in 2017 after graduating from the Oregon College of Art and Craft. She sculpts pieces with a maternal and feminist theme.
• Emily Jung Miller will be the ceramics resident for July 2024. Jung Miller is a Chinese-American based in Forest Grove, Oregon. She has been a professional artist since 2002 with a focus on environmental stewardship and community engagement.
• Courtney Maulding will be the resident for September 2024. Maulding discovered a process that incorporates ceramics with photography (called Cyanotype) as a student of art and design at the University of Houston—Clearlake in 2021.

Studio residents participate in community studio time, teach workshops, hold artist talks, and their work is featured in the Resident Ceramic Artist Exhibition at the end of the year.

“Our goal is to support emerging and established ceramic artists who are interested in building community engagement alongside furthering their own clay practice,” states the ceramics studio residency information page.
