Butler Property for Sale

Butler Property, a vacant lot on the corner of N Howard Street and E 1st Street, was declared surplus by Newberg City Council and is listed for sale according to a press release from the City of Newberg.

The city will sell the .24 acre property after June 17, 2024 and will not accept an offer lower than its appraised value of $257,500.

The lot was formerly a auto dealership called Butler Chevrolet, according to an article by Gary Allen at The Newberg Graphic. The last owners, Loren Berg, sold the lot to the City of Newberg for $1 in 2001 as the land was likely contaminated with petroleum products. The lot was cleared of containments, and has sat vacant since. The Butler Property houses the first Newberg Public Art Council Public Sculpture, a whimsical mouse installed in 2023.

Rotary Club of Newberg Plants 100th Peace Pole

On Monday, May 6th, the Rotary Club of Newberg planted its 100th Peace Pole at Lewis Audio & Video at 2112 Portland Road in Newberg.

The white waist-high white poles, with “May Peace Prevail on Earth” in the language of the country where it is placed, according to the Peace Pole website. There are an estimated 250,000 Peace Poles around the country.

“The idea is for people to come together and learn to talk about peace,” said Rotary Club Peace Pole project organizer in a release. “We’re always talking about war, about the enemy and how we’re going to defeat them. The idea is to have a conversation about peace, about how we can solve our problems without becoming violent.

The Peace Pole project started in 1955 by a Japanese survivor of the nuclear bomb dropped on Hiroshima. The first pole was planted in Japan in 1977, and the idea spread around the world. Newberg’s Early Bird Rotary and Noon Rotary clubs, in conjunction with the Jubitz Foundation, facilitated 50 Peace Poles around Newberg-Dundee in 2017.

Newberg Animal Shelter Wine & Whiskers Auction is Live

Newberg Animal Shelter’s annual fundraiser, Wine & Whiskers, is live and accepting bids on gift items and experiences to raise money for the shelter.

“The Newberg Animal Shelter’s Wine & Whiskers event is crucial to successfully continuing the operation of our local shelter,” stated the organization. “The funds raised will aid in the cost of saving helpless pets, providing needed medical attention and finding them new homes.”

Wine & Whiskers is a week-long fundraiser aimed to support animal-saving efforts by the organization. The shelter, which has adopted an average of 900 cats and dogs each year since 2020, uses funds to offset operational costs that come with running an animal shelter.

The auction ends May 19, 2024 at noon, after the Wine & Whiskers gala hosted at the Chehalem Cultural Center on May 18. While Wine & Whiskers is their biggest fundraising event of the year, they accept donations year-round via financial contributions, donations through Amazon, donated cans, and more.
