City of Newberg Receives 2023 CIS Innovation Award

The City of Newberg announced the receipt of the the CIS Innovation Award for 2023. The award recognizes innovation in the area of internal reforms. According to Newberg City Manager Will Worthey, Newberg’s S.T.R.I.V.E. policy, hiring policy, and our other moves in the area of risk management contributed to why they received the award.

“I am extremely proud to have brought home this award from the City County Insurance Conference and was proud to have accepted it on behalf of all of our staff and our hard-working council,” Worthey said in an email. “This multi-year history of innovation is, however, not over. In the years to come we will be working on our new financial plan and debt reduction strategies. My team will bring the same focus to these subjects as we did to the internal reforms”.

They (CIS) recognized that the city of Newberg has gone from being a poor performer in these areas (with lots of insurance losses and lawsuits) to one of the most effective city governments in Oregon, he added. Specifically, these actions coupled with a software overhaul reduced our CIS insurance claims of all sorts to the extent that our insurance bill was reduced in 2023 by $80,000; a first in the history of Newberg. The award was given for the policies created and implemented in 2022.

Why Is My Water Yellow? City of Newberg Responds.

According to a press release from the City of Newberg, residents largely in the southeast side of Newberg experienced a “yellow tinge” to their water late February. The Water Treatment Plant says this is not harmful.

“The problem most likely was caused by a filter that failed to backwash when it should have causing some extra iron to be sent out into the system. There is no health concern as iron is a secondary contaminant with only color issues, no health issues, the problem was resolved on Tuesday and the water should be clearing up quickly.”

If off colors persist, residents are encouraged to call the water treatment plant at 503-537-1239 for further inspection. A list of reasons your water could change color (and how to fix it) is listed on the city’s website.
