On October 3, at approximately 7 p.m., a small plane spiraled out of the sky and crashed into a home near North Cedar Street in Newberg, as reported in a press release from Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue (TVF&R).
Two of the plane’s occupants were declared dead at the scene by firefighters, while the third was transported to a Portland trauma hospital with serious injuries via a Life Flight helicopter.
According to KATU News, 20-year-old Barrett Bevacqua was flying the plane with 22-year-old Hillsboro Aero Academy instructor Michele Cavallotti, both of whom died in the crash. Emily Hurd, 20, was the third passenger airlifted to a Portland-area hospital with critical injuries. Bevacqua had just passed his test to get his commercial license, according to the article.
Although there were occupants in the home at the time of the collision, they were able to evacuate safely. Fortunately, no injuries were reported on the ground.
The Red Cross is currently providing assistance to the family that has been displaced by the accident.
TVF&R received assistance on the scene from numerous agencies, including the Newberg-Dundee Police Department, Dundee Fire, Dayton Fire, Portland General Electric, Northwest Natural Gas, the Federal Aviation Administration, and the National Transportation Safety Board.
The Newberg-Dundee Police Department is collaborating with the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board to conduct an investigation into the cause of the crash and the factors that led to the plane colliding with the home.
