Intersection Improvement Study to Start at Illinois and Main St.
Starting this month, the city will begin a study on how to improve the intersection at Illinois and Main St. According to the project site: “It has a history of collisions, close calls and mobility concerns. In 2006, N Main Street at Illinois Street was realigned from a skewed angle to a 90-degree intersection. This forced traffic on Highway 240 to slow before turning right onto city streets, however, the City aims to further improve the intersection.”
Review the project site for more information.
Fresh Hop Season is Here
Starting last month, hop farms around the Willamette Valley started harvesting hops from the 20-foot trellises. Breweries in the Pacific Northwest, where around 97% of the country’s hops are grown, have the unique opportunity to brew with those freshly-picked hops creating what is known as fresh hop beers. These usually manifest in blondes, pale ales, and IPAs. Beers are generally brewed with dried or pelletized hops, which increase their shelf storage and concentrate their flavors. Fresh hop beers are prized for their freshness and delicate flavors.
Find fresh hop beers at Wolves & People Farmhouse Brewery, Social Goods Beer & Pizza, Barley & Vine Tavern, and Chehalem Valley Brewing.
If you want to try some fresh hop beers, make sure to get out there and get them! They’re generally made in small batches with the intention of selling out quickly.
Grape Harvest Begins
While the beer industry pumps out fresh hop beers, the other Willamette Valley beverage cash crop’s harvest is currently underway. Vineyards all over the Pacific Northwest deployed teams of harvesters and harvest interns to pick grapes at their perfect ripeness.
According to Adelsheim Vineyard’s Instagram account, 2023 is shaping up to be an excellent year for the harvest in terms of both quality and yield. The grapes experienced a very wet spring, then long bouts of heat and sun, wrapping up with no smoke.
“We haven’t seen yields like this since 2017 or 2018,” said Adelsheim Viticulture Technician Danielle Zarro. “Higher yields are a great thing — it allows us to be a little bit pickier when it comes to our thinning instructions. More fruit means that we get to choose just the right clusters that we leave on the vines to ripen to perfection and bring to the winery.”
