NEWBERG, Ore. — The Newberg High School Tigers football team dropped to 0-3 with a 34-24 loss to Oregon City, the volleyball team went undefeated at the Woodburn Tournament, the boys soccer team won two games, the girls soccer team recorded a win and a tie, and the cross country teams competed at The Mook XC Invite in Tillamook.
George Fox University teams also took the field this week, as the football team improved to 3-0 with a win over Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, the men’s and women’s cross country teams placed first at the Pacific Lutheran University Invitational, the men’s and women’s soccer teams each recorded a tie and a loss, and the volleyball team lost all three of its matches.

Newberg High School Tigers

Newberg High School Football (0-3 overall) dropped its third game of the season to the Oregon City Pioneers (3-1 overall), 34-24, in a 6A non-league matchup on Friday, Sept. 18, at Newberg High School. The Tigers offense moved the ball, with sophomore quarterback Kamden Raever throwing for 320 yards and one touchdown, but three interceptions hampered progress. Senior wide receiver Owen Kubin finished with 278 receiving yards and a touchdown. Junior running back Gryder Crisp scored two touchdowns on a total of four rushing yards.
The Tigers defense faced a balanced Pioneers attack, allowing 197 rushing yards and 183 passing yards. Junior defensive back AJ Thomas recorded three tackles and returned an interception for a touchdown from more than 70 yards. Crisp also recorded four tackles as a linebacker.
The Tigers travel to Clackamas High School to face the Cavaliers in a 6A non-league matchup on Friday, Sept. 25, at 7 p.m.
Newberg High School Volleyball (6-3 overall, 1-2 league) lost two league matches: 3-0 at Century High School (3-6 overall) on Sept. 15 and 0-3 against Sherwood High School (7-3 overall) on Sept. 17. The Tigers won every match at the non-league Woodburn Tournament at Woodburn High School on Sept. 19, defeating Dallas High School 2-0, Woodburn High School 2-1, McKay High School 2-1, and Benson High School 2-0 to finish undefeated.
The Tigers return to league play on Tuesday, Sept. 22, at home against McMinnville High School (1-6 overall) at 6:45 p.m., and then travel to Forest Grove High School (7-4 overall) on Sept. 24 to play the Vikings at 6:45 p.m.
Newberg High School Boys Soccer (4-0-2 overall) won two non-league games, beating Salem’s McKay High School (4-1 overall) 1-0 on Sept. 15 in Salem and Aloha High School (0-5) 4-1 in Beaverton on Sept. 17. The Tigers travel to Woodburn on Sept. 22 for a 6 p.m. non-league matchup against the Bulldogs (3-2), and then host the Southridge High School Skyhawks (4-2) on Sept. 29 at 7 p.m.
Newberg High School Girls Soccer (1-3-2 overall) beat Salem’s McKay High School (1-4 overall) 6-0 in a non-league matchup at home on Sept. 15. The Tigers tied the Woodburn High School Bulldogs (1-2-1 overall) 0-0 on Sept. 17 at Woodburn High School. The Tigers host Portland’s St. Mary’s Academy (1-3-1) at Newberg High School on Sept. 22 at 7 p.m.
Newberg High School Boys and Girls Cross Country teams competed in The Mook XC Invite at Alderbrook Golf Course in Tillamook, Ore., on Sept. 19. According to AthleticTiming.net, Newberg placed 11th out of 21 teams in the gold varsity boys 5,000-meter race with 313 points. Senior Henry Shaw led the Tigers, finishing 31st in 16:55.9. Sophomore Kaden Herrera, freshman Niels Barber, and sophomore Ezra Ankeny all ran personal bests at the meet, with times of 17:18.6, 17:31.5, and 18:28.3, respectively.
In the silver varsity girls 5,000-meter race, Newberg placed 13th out of 16 teams with 272 points. Senior Eliana Byerley led the Tigers, finishing 18th overall in 21:13.4, her personal second-best time. Senior Ella Jaquith, junior Cecilia Herring, and sophomore Lydia Byerley all ran personal bests, finishing in 23:26.9, 23:51.1, and 23:54.0, respectively.

George Fox University Football (3-0) defeated the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Stags (1-1) 42-25 on Saturday, Sept. 19, in Claremont, Calif. The win included a record-breaking performance by receiver Karsen Denault and 585 total yards of offense, the second most in program history, according to George Fox Athletics. It was the Bruins’ first-ever win over the Stags.
“This team continues to mature before our eyes,” said Bruins football head coach Spencer Crace to George Fox Athletics’ Antonio Arredondo. “That first half was sloppy, and we kept finding ways to shoot ourselves in the foot. However, our guys kept competing. I am so proud of our resiliency and grit. Today was a great team win. Can’t wait to get back home and keep getting better.”
Claremont-Mudd-Scripps’ passing attack threw for 339 yards and three touchdowns. The Bruins run defense held the Stags to 10 rushing yards.
Sophomore quarterback JJ Leman and freshman Bupe Chisanga each rushed for more than 70 yards and a touchdown. Junior Brody Snyder rushed for 56 yards and one touchdown. Denault led the passing game with seven receptions for 214 yards — a school record for receivers — including a 92-yard score that is the longest play in program history. Chisanga added 71 receiving yards and one touchdown, giving him two touchdowns on the day. Leman completed 16 passes for 341 yards and three touchdowns, with one interception.
The Bruins, who are 3-0 for the first time in program history, travel to McMinnville on Oct. 3 to play rival Linfield Wildcats (1-1) after a bye week for both teams.
George Fox University Cross Country teams competed in the Pacific Lutheran University Invitational on Sept. 19 in Tacoma, Wash., with both the men’s and women’s teams placing first. Fifth-year senior and Newberg High School graduate Breanna Schmitt finished second in the women’s 6K race in 21:10.4, the top Division III finisher. Evergreen State’s Alauna Carstens won the race in 20:50.9. Chloe Cook and Hope Bridge also finished in the top 10, at fourth and sixth, respectively.
Andrew Dewar finished third in the men’s 8K race in 25:11.4. Two other Bruins runners finished in the top 10: Westin Madden in sixth and Caleb Hawkins in 10th.
“I think we showed our depth today,” said Bruins head coach Mike Wilson to George Fox Athletics’ Antonio Arredondo. “We have a lot of strength on both sides, and both men and women executed the race strategies cleanly today. It’s a great first step toward some of our season goals, and a lot of fun to see the growth and depth.”
George Fox University Men’s Soccer (1-4-1 overall) tied the University of Puget Sound (1-0-3) 3-3 on Saturday, Sept. 19, in Tacoma, Wash. Graduate student Zac LeVin scored a goal and added an assist, and senior Aidan Brouddus scored a goal assisted by junior Talon Wagner.
On Sunday, Sept. 20, the Bruins traveled to Pacific Lutheran University and lost 3-0 to the Lutes. Bruins goalkeeper Joshua Adams-Vakulenko faced a barrage of shots, ending the day with seven saves.
The Bruins play at home against the Linfield Wildcats (1-3-2) on Sunday, Sept. 27, at noon.
George Fox University Women’s Soccer (1-4-1 overall) also traveled to Tacoma, Wash., where it lost to No. 25 University of Puget Sound (4-0-1 overall) on Saturday, Sept. 19 0-4, and tied Pacific Lutheran University (3-1-2 overall) on Sunday, Sept. 20, 0-0. Sophomore goalkeeper Marisa Lam made 10 saves against Puget Sound, which had 13 shots on goal and 21 shots overall. Lam and sophomore goalkeeper Myann Johansen combined for six saves against Pacific Lutheran. Lam received a yellow card in the first half.
The Bruins are scheduled to play the Linfield Wildcats (2-3-1) on Sunday, Sept. 27, at 2:45 p.m. in Newberg.
George Fox University Volleyball (2-8 overall) lost all three of its matches. The Bruins fell to the Willamette University Bearcats (4-4 overall) 3-1 on Sept. 15 in Newberg, lost 3-0 at Pacific Lutheran University (8-2 overall) in Tacoma on Friday, Sept. 18, and completed the Tacoma road trip with a 3-0 loss to the University of Puget Sound (5-5 overall) on Saturday, Sept. 19.
The Bruins play the Linfield Wildcats (4-5 overall) at George Fox University on Friday, Sept. 25, at 7 p.m.
