This year’s fundraiser will focus on caregivers of people living with lupus, a chronic autoimmune disease in which the immune system attacks the body’s own tissues, causing inflammation, according to the Lupus Foundation of America. It can affect the skin, joints and organs including the kidneys, heart and lungs. Symptoms vary and can come and go in periods known as flares and remission.
Rebecca Bard, whose daughter has lupus, is scheduled to speak about her family’s experience and the role caregivers play, according to the release. The event is organized in partnership with Kristina Kalkman, a board member of the LFA’s Pacific Northwest chapter, and Kelsey Tuttle, who serves on both the national and Pacific Northwest chapter boards, the release states.
Guests will be offered L’Angolo Estate Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, food from Red Hills Market, a lupus-themed trivia contest and cornhole, according to the release. A silent auction will include a private dinner for six guests with Boxx and L’Angolo Estate founder Chase Renton, prepared by Chef Phillip of Larder Provisions, along with a case of six magnum-format (1.5-liter) bottles of Willamette Valley wine. Attendees will also receive a complimentary bottle of 2024 L’Angolo Estate Pinot Noir, the release states.
“At L’Angolo Estate, our entire team is honored to continue our partnership with Shannon and the Lupus Foundation of America in support of those living with lupus and the search for a cure,” Renton said in the release. “For more than five years, we’ve been grateful for the opportunity to use our tasting room and wines to bring people together, raise awareness and support causes that are deeply meaningful to us.”
Boxx, a Notre Dame graduate who won Olympic gold with the U.S. women’s national soccer team in 2004, 2008 and 2012 and was inducted into the National Soccer Hall of Fame in 2022, was diagnosed with lupus in 2008 during her professional playing career. She has partnered with L’Angolo Estate on the fundraiser since 2020, and the event has raised more than $140,000 for the LFA to date, the release states.
“I’ve always wanted to use my platform to raise awareness of lupus so that people diagnosed today have access to more resources and information than I did,” Boxx said in the release. “When I decided to launch an event to raise awareness and support the organization’s mission, partnering with L’Angolo Estate was a natural choice because of Chase’s commitment to philanthropy and the winery’s hospitality-driven approach to welcoming guests.”
Tickets cost $175 per person, including fees, and are available at Eventbrite, according to the release. A ticket includes a complimentary glass of wine, dinner from Red Hills Market, and a bottle of L’Angolo Pinot Noir.
