DAYTON, Ore. — An Italian wine investment group has acquired the Dundee Hills vineyard at 6475 Northeast Hilltop Lane in Dayton that grew grapes for Domaine Lumineux, the Coppola family-owned winery with a tasting room in downtown Newberg. The sale does not affect the tasting room’s operations.
ROCO Winery, a wholly owned subsidiary of HERITA USA — the fine wine import company controlled by Italy’s Marzotto family — announced March 18 that it had acquired 59 acres on Hilltop Lane in Dayton, of which 41 acres are under vine. The property sits between 670 and 870 feet in elevation in the Dundee Hills American Viticultural Area, less than a mile from where Oregon’s first Pinot Noir vines were planted in 1965, according to the company’s press release.
The Domaine Lumineux brand, along with its tasting room at 115 N. Washington St. in Newberg, was not part of the transaction and will remain under the ownership of the Francis Ford Coppola wine portfolio.
Domaine Lumineux Director of Operations Erin Herrmann said the decision was made with the brand’s long-term sustainability in mind.
“This was a thoughtful decision as part of our long-term planning to support a more sustainable future for the Domaine Lumineux brand and business, which were not part of the sale,” Herrmann said in a statement to Newsberg. “Our tasting room and hospitality program in Newberg are not impacted and will continue to grow as we build on the experience we’ve created there.”
Herrmann added that Domaine Lumineux has secured an option to continue sourcing fruit from the Hilltop Lane property.
“We will remain connected [to the vineyard] as an important part of our story,” she said.
The Hilltop Lane property has been central to the Domaine Lumineux story since Francis Ford Coppola’s wine company acquired Vista Hills Vineyard in 2018. The estate’s 42 acres of vines — planted on a site associated with the region’s earliest Pinot Noir history — survived a 2021 Halloween fire that destroyed the original tasting room in Dayton. Following the fire, the brand relocated its hospitality operations, eventually landing in the former Recipe: A Neighborhood Kitchen building in downtown Newberg, where it rebranded from Domaine de Broglie to Domaine Lumineux and opened in early 2024.
For ROCO and its parent company, the acquisition represents the fourth investment in premium Willamette Valley vineyard land. The Marzotto family purchased ROCO Winery in 2021, acquired vineyard acreage in the Chehalem Mountains AVA in 2023, and added Marsh Estate in the Yamhill-Carlton AVA in 2025, according to the press release.
“Acquiring these vineyards marks a significant milestone for ROCO,” said Vincent Chiaramonte, President and CEO of HERITA USA, in the release. “This important purchase grants ROCO access to some of the best sites in Dundee Hills, further strengthening our commitment to producing world-class wines from Oregon’s most renowned AVAs.”
Vittorio Marzotto, a fourth-generation family member and Vice President of Strategic Initiatives at HERITA USA, said the Willamette Valley has earned a place alongside the family’s Italian holdings.
“We recognize in this region the same dedication to quality, unique microclimates, and vibrant community spirit that define our most celebrated vineyards in Italy,” Marzotto said in the release.
ROCO was founded in 2003 by Rollin Soles and Corby Stonebraker-Soles and is a leading producer of Oregon Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and sparkling wine. ROCO Winery’s 2013 RMS Brut 10-Year Delayed Disgorgement was named the number one wine of 2024 by Wine Enthusiast Magazine.
The company also announced that a new hospitality center, CASA ROCO, is expected to open later this year.
