Pet of the Month: Ghost

Ghost is a 4.5 year old pit bull-Dalmatian mix at the Newberg Animal Shelter looking for a calm home to rest.

NEWBERG, Ore. — Ghost isn’t just looking for a home — she’s looking for a reset.

The 4½-year-old pit bull–Dalmatian mix, weighing about 54 pounds, is this month’s featured pet at the Newberg Animal Shelter. She was originally adopted as a puppy in 2021 and spent four years with a family before being returned in November 2025 due to a housing change.

Since then, shelter staff say Ghost has struggled to adjust.

“She’s really sensitive and picks up on the energy around her,” staff shared. “The shelter environment has been hard for her, and she’s not always able to show how sweet she really is.”

Despite that, Ghost’s personality shines through in quieter moments. She’s affectionate, loyal, and happiest when she’s close to her people — a classic “Velcro dog” who just wants to be near you.

“I’m basically a marshmallow with feelings,” Ghost’s bio reads. “Once I learn to trust you, my fun and excitable personality really comes out.”

Because of the stress of the shelter, staff says Ghost would likely do best in a calm home, either as the only pet or with a relaxed, friendly dog. A fenced yard is also recommended, as apartment living hasn’t been a good fit for her in the past.

To help her transition, the shelter is open to foster or foster-to-adopt arrangements, giving Ghost a chance to decompress and show her true personality outside the kennel.

“With a little patience and understanding,” her bio reads, “I promise to be the most devoted and loving companion.”
