Art in the Berg Seeking Artists for Upcoming Market

NEWBERG, Ore. — Local artists will have a new place to showcase their work this fall as the Newberg Public Art Council hosts its first Art in the Berg marketplace Nov. 22–23 at 306 N. Main St.

The indoor market will feature local professional artists offering original works across a variety of mediums. Each artist will receive an 8-by-8-foot booth inside a secured, heated building. Visitors can browse and purchase art while enjoying local food and beverages, including wine, nonalcoholic drinks, and fare from an on-site food cart.

Participation is open to artists with an active website or social media presence. Artwork must be original and created by the exhibiting artist. The council will not accept pornographic, political, or otherwise controversial content. Space is limited by category to ensure a diverse selection of art.

Interested artists can apply through the event’s online form. Accepted participants will be notified by email and must pay a $50 booth fee to reserve their space. Additional event details will be included in confirmation emails.

Newberg Public Works Director Set to Retire in Spring 2026

NEWBERG, Ore. — Newberg Public Works Director Russ Thomas is preparing to retire in spring 2026 after 45 years serving in various roles across the city, according to the City of Newberg.

“Russ has dedicated his life to public service, beginning with his enlistment in the U.S. Navy in 1973, finding his way to the City of Newberg as a laborer in 1979, and then working his way up the ladder to his current position as Newberg’s Public Works Director,” said Oregon Chapter American Public Works Association President Tim Blackwood. “Russ’ commitment to the public works profession overall, and to the Oregon Chapter of APWA, is unparalleled.”

The city has not yet announced plans to recruit a new public works director.

CPRD Hosts Public Open Houses on Development Projects

NEWBERG, Ore. — Chehalem Park and Recreation District will host two public open house events in November about Renne Field, Ewing Young Park, and new opportunities for recreational mountain biking.

“These projects have drawn a lot of interest from the public,” said CPRD Public Information Officer Kat Ricker in a press release. “We want to create an opportunity for the wider public to engage and learn what is happening with these areas of interest.”

The district will hold an in-person open house from 5 to 7 p.m. Nov. 19 at the CPRD administration offices, 125 S. Elliott Road, and a virtual open house from 4 to 6 p.m. Nov. 20. Both events are open to the public and will invite attendees to share their thoughts on the projects.

Discussions will focus on three major initiatives on CPRD’s current project list: Renne Field Park development, in partnership with the Newberg-Dundee School District, CPRD plans include installing a turf field, eight-lane synthetic track, a concession stand, restrooms, pickleball courts, lighting, and an ADA-compliant pathway; Ewing Young Park footbridge construction, where CPRD proposes building a bridge over Chehalem Creek, providing access to 11 undeveloped acres of parkland; and Mountain biking trail initiatives, where CPRD will present potential plans for new trail development in the district.

Friends’ Park, Tom Gail Park To Undergo Maintenance

NEWBERG, Ore. — According to the CPRD website, Friends’ Park and Tom Gail Park play structures are undergoing maintenance starting Oct. 27.

The slide at Friends’ Park in southeast Newberg near Sportsman Airpark will be replaced, weather-permitting in one day.

The stepper at Tom Gail Park will be replaced with overhead, or “monkey,” bars.
