With students and alumni filling the stands, the atmosphere lived up to the occasion.
“It was a fun night for the fans, a great night for our kids,” Newberg head coach Jeremy Johnson said.
Throughout the cool fall evening, big plays were plentiful. The Tigers opened the game with a 63-yard end-around touchdown by senior running back Chace Macken.
Century answered with a 56-yard one-handed catch-and-run touchdown by Ryder Owens.
Newberg responded with two long scores from speedy senior Ethan Hein — first a 78-yard screen pass touchdown, then a 38-yard jet sweep that made it 20-6 with 10 minutes left in the second quarter.
The good times continued as senior quarterback Parker Sellner added two more touchdown passes: a 70-yard strike to Lucas Vaughn and a 3-yard fade to junior Owen Kubin, marking Kubin’s first career touchdown.
“We like to distribute the ball. You look at our touchdown situation — a lot of guys got opportunities,” Johnson said.
With the Tigers leading by 35 at halftime, the running clock gave more of Newberg’s roster a chance to play.
“I have kids that can make tremendous plays, but there’s a lot of other kids that make really good plays, too,” Johnson said.
News and Notes
Senior running back Deaken Santrizos added a 15-yard touchdown run in the first half. A promising second-half drive ended with a touchdown by sophomore Carter Clock, but it was called back due to a holding penalty.
Newberg faces a short week following homecoming as the Tigers travel to McMinnville (1-4, 0-1 Pacific Conference) to take on the Grizzlies on Thursday at 7 p.m.
“They’re going to be well-coached. We have to figure out how to beat them,” Johnson said.
