DAYTON, Ore. — Bill Stoller, founder and proprietor of Stoller Wine Group and a driving force in Oregon’s wine industry, passed away peacefully in his sleep the night of Tuesday, April 22. He was 77.

According to a press release from Stoller Wine Group, Stoller’s impact stretched far beyond his award-winning wines. Known for his leadership, compassion, and vision, Stoller championed innovation and sustainable practices with a focus on building a wine legacy that would last generations.
“Bill was more than a remarkable entrepreneur—he was a generous mentor, a steadfast friend, and a passionate advocate for connecting people with opportunity,” Stoller Wine Group President Gary Mortensen said. “He would want us to continue pushing forward to realize his dream.”
Stoller was widely recognized for his contributions, the release stated. The Oregon Wine Board honored him with a Lifetime Achievement Award, and he recently received the prestigious Diploma of Honor from the Fédération Internationale des Confréries Bachiques. Before his success in wine, he co-founded Express Employment Professionals in 1983, helping build one of the nation’s largest staffing firms.
In founding the Stoller Wine Group, Stoller set out a 200-year vision rooted in reverence for the land. His commitment to sustainability earned the organization B Corp certification, reflecting his belief that businesses should serve their communities for generations.
His leadership style left a lasting impression on those around him.
“Bill’s bold 200-year vision and unwavering belief in the potential of the Oregon wine industry is the cornerstone of everything we do,” Mortensen said.
At the time of his passing, Stoller’s influence was deeply woven into the company’s culture, and his team said they are committed to carrying forward his dream of world-class winemaking and welcoming hospitality.
Per Stoller’s wishes, the company said it will remain focused on the future while keeping his spirit and values at the heart of its work.
