Newberg resident Gina Kluver founded the Newberg Christmas Light Route in 2021 as a way for people to enjoy the season and tap into a sense of community from their cars during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Participating houses submit photos or detailed descriptions of the decorated homes or neighborhoods to Kluver, who picks the houses that are featured on the route.

“This event has brought me personally, so much joy as I have been able to connect with other community members and see people come together to enjoy the lights,” she said in a post on Facebook.

The Newberg Christmas Light route includes 14 houses, three neighborhoods, and one business. They’re evenly scattered around town, from north Newberg on College Street to south near Rogers Landing and beyond.

A few houses on the route are using the event as a fundraiser for causes important to them. The house at 31727 NE Wilsonvile Road is raising money for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, the Hawthorn Loop Light Show is raising money for A Family Place, and 209 South Center Street is raising money for Gulf Course STARS.

Of the 17 listed locations, 10 are listed as part of the annual scavenger hunt. Those locations have a unique stamp, which can be applied to a holiday-tree-shaped image families print at home. After collecting six stamps, scavenger hunters can email a picture of the stamped image by December 31 to newbergchristmaslightroute@gmail.com, which enters them into a prize drawing.

Last year, 157 scavenger hunt entries were completed, with 50 prizes were sent out to the winners. Any individuals or businesses interested in sponsoring or offering a prize can email the email address above, or send a venmo contribution to @newberg-christmas-light-route on Venmo before December 25, 2024.

The houses on the route will be illuminated from December 15 to 29 at a minimum (though many of the houses are decorated as of December 9). Learn more and stay up to day with the Newberg Christmas Light Route 2024 by visiting the organization’s Facebook page.
