Newberg Game Con comes to George Fox, the CCRLS Mobile App is working again, Ray’s is reopening, the Camellia Festival is canceled, and more

Registration for Community Class “Working Toward Peace: Ending War 101” Now Open

Newberg Noon Rotary Club announced they’ve opened registration for the class, “Working Toward Peace: Ending War 101,” to be held in collaboration with Portland Community College (PCC) Newberg Campus Starting April 20, 2024.

The class poses unique answers and discussions surrounding tough questions:

  • “Can war be ended?”
  • “Is a just war even possible?”
  • “What does tolerating war cost us?”
  • “What can we do?”

Classes are held every Saturday morning from 10 – 11:30 a.m. led by two members of the Newberg Noon Rotary Club, PCC director Laura Horani and Newberg Rotary Peace Chair Mike Caruso.

Camellia Festival Canceled During Construction, Walk/Run Still On

The Chehalem Cultural Center announced the cancellation of the Camellia Festival’s performances and demonstrations typical during the event due to active construction in the performing arts wing of the building.

While the festival is cancelled, the 5k and 10k walk/run is still happening, as is the bloom show.

The Camellia 5k/10k Run is an annual race that starts and finishes at the Chehalem Cultural Center. Registration is open for those who wish to participate.

The 83rd Annual Camellia Bloom Show is from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Parrish Gallery at the Cultural Center. All are welcome to enter blooms from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m., with judging from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m.

The Chehalem Cultural Center has been under construction since Fall 2023 and will continue until Fall 2024. The performing arts wing project is the renovation of 9,000 square feet of existing, currently unused in the cultural center. Improvements include a dance and movement studio, a new grand lobby, more restrooms, meeting spaces, and the 225 seat LaJoie Theatre.

Ray’s Produce Reopening on Wednesday, March 13

Local open air farm stand Ray’s Produce on the corner of E Hancock and Main Streets is reopening for the spring and summer season on Wednesday, March 13 according to a sign in front of the market.

Ray’s Produce is a “family owned and operated produce store specializing in locally grown produce and season items,” according to their website. The market stocks a variety of fruits and vegetables, as well as a collection of Mexican cuisine specialty ingredients.

Newberg Game Con Coming to George Fox

Newberg’s very first board game convention is coming to Newberg via George Fox University’s Canyon Commons on April 20 and April 21 from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Attendees can bring their own games or borrow a game available at the convention. Games can be scheduled or players can join a pick up game at the convention.

To join the convention, attendees register online and secure their spot at the convention. Registered attendees also get exclusive perks at local businesses like Lyrics Cafe and Abby’s Pizza. Games will also be available for purchase from Expansions Games on site.

“We look forward to bringing together board game beginners, enthusiasts, and developers for a fun and exciting weekend of gaming and socializing.”

Registration is $5 and runs from March 1 and is closing April 20.

Newberg Game Con is organized by Hobby Games of Newberg with support from George Fox University Library and the George Fox University of History and Politics.

Dundee Wine Library Grand Opens McMinnville Location March 16

According to a post on Instagram, the Dundee Wine Library is opening the doors to its new McMinnville location at 619 NE Third Street on March 16 and 17 from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

“Searching for a “pot of gold” this weekend?” the post asked. “A glass of our Prelude Chardonnay may be exactly what you’re looking for!”

The Dundee Wine Library closed its Dundee location late 2023 and announced they were moving to McMinnville. They have been pouring out of their new location since December, but using this weekend as a grand opening.

CCRLS Catalog Mobile App is Restored

The Chemeketa Cooperative Regional Library Service (CCRLS) mobile app, which experienced an outage in November, restored service last week.

CCRLS Mobile App is a way for library card holders to explore the regional library collective’s catalog and place holds as well as other functions.
