Newberg Notices | November 7

Yamhill County Employees are on strike, the city asks citizens to rake up leaves, Newberg is now equipped with Narcan, Anam Cara closed their tasting room, and someone burgled the Dollar Tree Monday night.

Yamhill County Employees on Strike

According to a report on KOIN, Yamhill County Employees Association started striking on Friday, November 3, 2023 pushing for better pay to match rising cost of living costs. According to the report, the union is asking for a 15% increase in pay.

“With the rapid cost of living increases happening in Yamhill County, many workers are not able to afford housing and basic necessities and many are eligible for state assistance due to low pay,” the union said in a press release sent on Thursday.

While Yamhill County’s main offices are around McMinnville, Newbergians may have noticed the green shirts of striking employees at the Yamhill County Newberg Behavioral Heath offices on 99W.

“The County remains committed to continuing to work with AFSCME to reach an agreement,” according to a release from the county. “However, any agreement will need to reflect an equitable balance between the wants and needs of our AFSCME represented employees, the level of available funding and the interests of the taxpaying public. We remain committed to continuing to provide the critical services our community expects and deserves.”

More than 400 Yamhill County workers are represented by the union, according to a report by KPTV.

City Reminds Citizens that Homeowners Are Responsible for Leaves on Sidewalks, Streets

The City of Newberg sent a message through its website reminding Newberg residents they are responsible for fallen leaves on sidewalks and streets. Raking, sweeping, or blowing leaves into the street is a violation of Newberg Municipal Code 8.15.030.B-10, which may result in fines.

The City of Newberg does not have a leaf pick up service, and is asking residents to clear clogged storm drains if they’re seen. Drains clogged with leaves can create slippery surfaces and potential flooding.

City of Newberg Equips Facilities; Trains Staff To Use Lifesaving Narcan

Accodring to the City Of Newberg’s website, the city now has the life-saving drug Naloxone (known as Narcan) in all its facilities. Narcan is an effective tool to respond to an opioid overdose. Narcan quickly blocks the effects of opioids on the brain — allowing a person suffering an overdose to be revived.

“Yamhill County is seeing increased overdoses from fentanyl,” the release stated; “however, opioids also include prescribed medications such as oxycodone hydrocodone. Overdoses are not limited to illicit drug use. Children can accidentally access both legal and illegal drugs; adults can miscalculate doses of prescribed medications.”

Yamhill County Health partnered with the City of Newberg to provide Narcan in the facilities and train staff on its use. Newberg-Dundee Police and Tualatin Valley Fire and Rescue already use Narcan in their operational protocols.
