Uflora Closing Retail Plant House, Continues Floralworks

Local houseplant shop Uflora Plant House is closing their retail shop on August 13, 2023 with one final sale of their inventory.

The local houseplant and floralworks shop, Uflora Plant House + Floralworks, located at 111 S College St. in Newberg, is closing its retail space to focus on the floralworks side of the business, including wedding and event floral styling.

“In a bittersweet update from your local plant house,” co-owner Ella Kaye wrote in a post on the company’s Instagram page. “After five years of being open and filled with amazing memories and customers, we are closing our retail store. We’re thankful to the community that has supported us since 2018.”

Founded by Ella and Andrew Kaye with Taylor and Josi Hickernell in 2018 after a successfully-funded Kickstarter Campaign, the Kayes became the sole owner of the shop in 2021 and continued operations when possible throughout the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The shutdowns and pandemic really impacted our momentum and the overall market,” Ella said. “Since then, the plant house’s retail success has been limited.”

With increased costs of goods and dwindling foot traffic during the pandemic, stock retention in the retail space became a challenge. The shop explored creative approaches to attract shoppers, such as terrarium classes, painting workshops, and live music. However, the inconsistent numbers led to the decision to close the retail side.

“I love helping people find the perfect pot and plant combos that fit their lighting, care habits, and aesthetic preferences,” Ella said. “It was always an incredibly fun process to learn about our customers and help them walk away with a finished product or a collection of living art for their spaces.”

Ella said she will continue working on the other side of the business, focusing on “floralworks,” which includes floral arrangements for weddings, events, and businesses.

Uflora Plant House will officially close its retail doors on Sunday, August 13. The Plant House is holding a final liquidation sale that day from 12 – 5 p.m., where remaining items will be marked down by as much as 50 percent.

Downtown Commercial Vacancies

Uflora’s closure highlights another vacant downtown Newberg business space. On Newberg’s two main streets, Hancock and 1st Streets, at least eight business-zoned spaces are currently unoccupied.

Building owner and local artist Gary Buhler, who also owns the Blue Trout Gallery next door to Uflora, stated that he will soon be renting the space to anyone looking for a smaller space in the downtown core area. His gallery will take back the back section of Uflora’s former space, leaving a 600-square-foot area ready to rent.

“I’m in discussions with people about different ideas,” Buhler said. “But I need a place that’s quiet and complements my gallery and studio — someone who will bring a positive energy to the space.”

Businesses interested in leasing the space can contact Buhler at gbuhler@georgefox.edu or call (971) 217 – 5003.
